About Levels and Prerequisites

The American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Program

We have modified our Learn-To-Swim Program Lesson sessions to run in four, two-week sessions. Classes will be offered Monday thru Friday. This program, a unique six-level instructional approach, helps swimmers of all ages and abilities develop swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience and to be safe in, on and around the water.

About program for Cohasset Sailing Club sailors/Cohasset Recreation Department

You may sign-up and pay for ONLY ONE SESSION at a time. Please know we are unable to predict the number of students that may 'move-up' or continue in the same class from session to session.  Swim lesson class assignments will be made on a first come, first serve basis. We will do our best to accommodate your first choice. Registrations will NOT be accepted over the phone.

Pre-School Lessons: Members $25, Non-members $45
Levels 1 thru 6 Swim Lessons: Members $55, Non-Members: $75

All Session I class assignments will be available at the Swim Center on June 19. Please check class assignments for possible changes. No phone calls will be made to patrons to advise of changes.

Due to the overwhelming response for our Red Cross Swim Lessons, we have found it necessary to institute the following policy regarding Non-Member swim lesson registration: Non-members may sign up for Session I on Saturday, June 18th from 9am to Noon; Session II on Saturday, July 9th; Session III on Saturday, July 23; Session IV on Saturday, August 6th. All non-member registrations must be in person at the Swim Center and are based on availability.

Session I   June 27 - July 8
For members, complete your online registration by May 25th.
Members may sign-up for any ONE of the four two-week sessions.
After May 25th (for non-members and members that miss the online registration deadline):
Walk-in Registration will be at the CSC June 18, 9 - 12. Non-members may sign-up for Session I only if space is available. Members may sign-up for any one of the four two-week sessions.

Session II   July 11 - July 22
Any member not in a session may register anytime.
Non-members may sign-up for Session II on Saturday, July 9th after 3pm only if space is available.
Members in Session I – sign-up Friday, July 8th, after your swimmer's class.

Session III   July 25- August 5
Any member not in a session may register anytime.
Non-members may sign-up for Session III only on Saturday, July 23, if space is available.
Members in Session II - sign-up Friday, July 22nd after your swimmer's class.

Session IV   August 8 - August 19
Any member not in a session may register anytime.
Non-members may sign-up for Session IV on Saturday, August 6th, if space is available.
Members in Session III - sign-up Friday, August 5th after your swimmer's class.

Levels and Prerequisites

The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the preceding level, except for Level 1, which has no prerequisite. Each level includes training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress, in addition to the skills outlined below.

Pre-School Swim Lessons: For ages 3 to 4 years and ages 4 to 5 years.
The objective of this class is to help the child feel comfortable in the water and work on skills that are age appropriate to their physical development.
Level I: Introduction to Water Skills    Prerequisite: Child must be five years of age or older.
The objective of this class is to help the child feel comfortable in the water. Skills introduced will be: water adjustment, breath control, buoyancy, entering/exiting water, front/back kicking with support, and using arm strokes for short distances. No floatation device will be used.
(No Prerequisite)
  • Enter and exit water safely
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Exhale underwater through mouth and nose
  • Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object
  • Float on front and back
  • Explore arm and hand movements
  • Swim on front and back using arm and leg actions
  • Follow basic water safety rules
  • Use a life jacket
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills    Prerequisite: (Must be able to perform level 1 skills)
Skills:
  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side
  • Exit water safely using ladder or side
  • Submerge entire head
  • Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object
  • Float on front and back
  • Perform front and back glide
  • Roll over from front to back, back to front
  • Swim on side
  • Swim on front and back using combined strokes
  • Tread water using arm and leg motions
Level 3: Stroke Development   (Must be able to perform level 2 skills)
    Skills:
  • Jump into deep water from the side
  • Dive from kneeling or standing position
  • Submerge and retrieve an object
  • Bob with the head fully submerged
  • Use rotary breathing in horizontal position
  • Perform front and back glide
  • Perform survival float
  • Perform front and back crawl
  • Butterfly - kick and body motion
  • Perform the HELP and Huddle position
  • Perform a reaching assist
  • Use Check-Call-Care in an emergency
  • Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back
Level 4: Stroke Improvement    (Must be able to perform level 3 skills))
    Skills:
  • Perform shallow dive or dive from stride position
  • Swim underwater
  • Perform feet-first surface dive
  • Perform open turns on front and back using any stroke
  • Tread water using sculling arm motions and kick
    Perform the following:
  • Front and back crawl
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Elementary backstroke
  • Swim on side using scissors-like kick
  • Use safe diving rules
  • Perform compact jump into water from a height while wearing a life jacket
  • Perform a throwing assist
  • Care for conscious choking victim
Level 5: Stroke Refinement   Prerequisite: Must be able to perform level 4 skills
    Skills:
  • Tread water with two different kicks
  • Learn survival swimming
  • Perform rescue breathing
  • Perform the following:
  • Standing dive
  • Shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke
  • Tuck surface dive
  • Pike surface dive
  • Front flip turn
  • Backstroke flip turn
  • Front and back crawl
  • Butterfly
  • Breaststroke
  • Elementary backstroke
  • Sidestroke
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency   Prerequisite: (Must be able to perform level 5 skills)
  • Participants will cover both Lifeguard Readiness and Fitness Swimmer over two sessions.
  • 1. Lifeguard Readiness: For swimmers interested in a focus on Personal Water Safety and Lifeguard Readiness. 2. Fitness Swimmer: For anyone interested in competitive swimming or achieving a higher level of fitness

Cohasset Sailing Club:Level 5 & Level 6

Do you have scheduling conflicts for Level 5 and Level 6 swimmers who are also taking Cohasset Sailing Club lessons? Many parents have expressed that they would like their children to continue with Level 5 and Level 6 to work towards becoming strong, confident swimmers and be water safety prepared.

We would like to accommodate students who wish to take sailing and swimming.  Please speak to our Director to work out an individualized swim program to fit around your sailing times.

We are hoping students will sign-up for two back to back sessions to maximize the results. The charge is $35.00 per session for members of the Swim Center ($5.80 per class).

Cohasset Recreation Department

Should your child be attending the Cohasset Recreation Department's Playground Program and wish to take swim lessons - not a problem. Simply sign-up for swim lessons thru the Cohasset Recreation Department.

Red Cross Swim Lessons offer four two-week sessions. Levels 1-4 will be offered at 11:30-12:00 Mondays-Fridays.

Please coordinate any scheduling, attendance, drop-offs or pick-up changes through the Rec. Dept. – this communication is vital. As always, thank you in advance for your cooperation helping us maintain a safe environment for the children during this off-site activity.

Birthday Parties

Birthday parties are offered for $75 on Saturdays and Sundays from 10-12. Birthday parties have been popular so book your party early. We do require a $25 non-refundable deposit ahead of time to reserve your reservation. Please book your party with a C.S.C. manager and ask for details on how we can help.

To provide the membership with a safe, highly maintained facility it takes required repairs, upgrades and improvements.   Our pool facility has had extensive use over the past 35 years.   Membership fees are set at a minimum to cover operating expenses only - the majority of improvements are made through the use of donations and fundraising.
